Sometimes as we drive around we notice different roofs that look like they have moss or fungus of some sort on them. This seems to be most noticeable when there are dense trees around the house. We’ve learned that keeping a clean roof is vital for both a healthy roof and a healthy home.
Keeping a Clean Roof
Fungus, mold, moss or mildew can cause serious damage to any roof over time. There are many products available to help with the cleaning, but we uncovered a few that seem to be less work intensive and more eco-friendly than others when keeping a clean roof.
A Few Products to Consider
Spray and Forget is a non-corrosive, non-acidic and biodegradable product. Just as its name suggests you really do just spray and forget it.
Roof Wash is another very well received oxygen based product that becomes biodegradable within 5-6 hours. Again, this product is very easily applied.
Rust- Oleum carries a product called Zinsser Jomax Roof Cleaner and Mildew Stain Remover. This product does need to be mixed with bleach as well as needs to be rinsed off. This product requires a little more work, but still an exceptionally good product.
Protect Your Gardens
Once you’ve decided on a product, there are still a few steps to ensure a safe, well-done job. Make sure that you take the time to protect the tender plants in your gardens. Covering them with a tarp rather than a sheet allows any run off to do just that – run off, rather than soaking through.
Remember Safety When Keeping a Clean Roof
Make sure to take the appropriate safety measures as well. Always work in a team of two when doing any sort of ladder work. One of you climbs, while that other spends their time a spotter for any trouble that may pop up.
In the case of any spraying application, everyone involved should be using the appropriate safety equipment. As we’ve previously mentioned, wear old clothes. Also make sure to wear safety glasses and gloves as well. It’s always better to err on the side of safety.
Following Directions
Following the product directions, make sure to understand the process fully before starting. This is not a good time to use a pressure washer. Most products are designed to be used with a garden hose and an applicator. Using a pressure washer can lead to serious roof damage, not knowing what’s under the mold or mildew.
Take Stock of Everything
This is a great time however to take stock of the shape your roof and shingles are in. Of course it’s at this time as well that there may be a need to call in the professionals.
There are two things to be very mindful of as well. Make sure that any DIY project is completely within the scope of your capabilities. It’s better to not risk a fall than keeping a clean roof.
Secondly, never, ever start the cleaning process on a roof that has any visible damage. This is where you do need to call in the pros.
