What is the better choice a steel roof or a shingled roof?

When it comes to replacing your roof, the first consideration homeowners have to get past is whether they should go for a steel roof or a roof with shingles? Believe it or not, here at JN Roofing we faced this dilemma as well.

When JN Roofing first started out we had a choices to make.

  1. Do we offer shingled roofs or steel roofs.
  2. Do we offer both shinged roofs and steel roofs

To be fair, steel and shingles both have their pros and cons, but in the end of day, we chose to proceed exclusively with shingles. Why did we make this choice?

There were many reasons, but here are some of the things that made our decision for us (and perhaps will for you as well). First metal roofs are loud. Even rain storms (much less hailstorms) can make such a racket that people find it impacts their sleep. Second, while there is no argument that well made and properly installed metal roofs last a long time, what many homeowners don’t realize is that they often only offer a ten or maybe fifteen year paint warranty (and when the paint chips off its very noticeable). Third, cost. Steel prices, which have always been expensive, have skyrocketed in recent years which in turn has made steel roofs much more expensive.

Further to this last point, cost is a relative thing.

It can easily (and accurately) be argued that if a metal roof lasts long enough, that could offset the extra expense. But when JN Roofing explored the available options and settled on Owens Corning Duration shingles, the decision was an easy one for us.

Why was that?

JN Roofing is able to offer the Owens Corning Duration shingles with a fifty (yes 50!) year warranty. When you consider that plus the fact that by using the Duration shingles as opposed to a metal roof it reduces the cost by about forty percent less than a steel roof it was a no brainier. Based on this we knew we could provide in our opinion a better option, with a similar lifespan and do it at a much lower cost.

It made the decision and easy one for JN Roofing to go with shingles and only shingles.
